a way of practicing that’s yours, not a copy of mine.
Clinical supervision for LCMHC-A associates working toward full licensure, grounded in the same Nova Method that shapes the therapy.
how I supervise
Supervision is its own skill set, and I trained in it deliberately — the 45-hour Approved Clinical Supervisor program through UNC Greensboro’s Department of Counseling and Educational Development, covering supervision models, techniques, the supervisory relationship, ethics, evaluation, and the use of technology.
In practice that means I plan sessions rather than improvise them, and I try to think like a supervisor instead of sliding back into the counselor’s chair. Some hours are teaching and some are consulting. Some go to what a case is stirring up in you, always in service of your clinical development rather than processing your material for its own sake.
You can expect a clear professional disclosure statement and informed consent up front, goals we set together, and feedback as we go so nothing in a formal evaluation is a surprise. I balance challenge and support on purpose: too much support and nothing grows, too much challenge and you stop bringing me the hard cases. Mistakes are supervision material — they’re most of what the hour is for.
the Nova Method in supervision
The framework that shapes the therapy shapes supervision too. Six stages of change across mind, body, and relationships give us a shared language for your cases while you grow into your own way of practicing.

The NCBLCMHC sets the thresholds; supervision is how you meet them. Here’s the shape of it, so you know what we’re tracking together.
A minimum of 3,000 hours of supervised professional practice, of which at least 2,000 must be direct counseling — live contact with individuals, groups, or families. Master’s practicum and internship hours don’t count, and no more than 40 hours per week may be applied.
At least 100 hours of clinical supervision across your associate licensure, of which a minimum of 75 hours must be individual supervision.
Per 40 hours of supervised practice: at least one hour of individual supervision, or two hours of group. Supervision hours sit outside that 40 — they don’t count toward your practice total.
Individual supervision is face-to-face with one or two supervisees; video counts as long as it’s synchronous, verbal, and visual. Sessions must rest on direct or live observation, co-therapy, or audio/video recordings — written self-reports can supplement, never substitute.
Supervision begins with the Board’s Supervision Contract form — supervisor, contact information, modality, frequency, and location — approved before you render services. The Board must be notified within two weeks of any change or termination.
You may apply up to 60 days before your hours are complete, with an active LCMHCA license, a new Professional Disclosure Statement, background check, and a Jurisprudence Exam certificate from within the prior six months. Supervision continues until your LCMHC license is actually issued.
Requirements summarized from the NCBLCMHC’s LCMHCA information page (Rules .0209–.0211, .0702, .0801) as of September 2026. The Board’s own page and administrative rules govern — check them before relying on any summary, including this one.
